ABOUT MY PRACTICE

I use a wide variety of media including installation and performance, to communicate ideas both within and outwith the gallery context. Much of my work centres around situations and experiences which have created insecurity and neurosis, and conversely the things in life which give a sense of security and place. My work reflects on identity, taking the form of visual narratives which illustrate our fragility and hopefulness as human beings.

I am particularly interested in memory and place - what we remember as time passes, and the special thoughts we hold of places and the things we did there.

Fiona McDonald is a visual artist with whom I have collaborated on a number of projects, and examples of the work we have produced together can also be found on this site.

I am currently a lecturer at Elmwood College in Cupar, previously teaching in the Art & Design and Multimedia Departments, and more recently working in the Student Development Department. This involves working with young adults who suffer from Autism, and other learning difficulties. I find this work very rewarding, and it allows me to use my knowledge as an artist to provide creative experiences for my students in their daily learning.

A member of the original steering group which eventually became Cupar Arts, I am currently Chair of this organisation and have worked as Visual Arts Co-ordinator for the past three years. In 2010 I was elected to the SSA Council (Society for Scottish Artists).
